What is mechanical calibration?

Mechanical calibration guarantees the accuracy of technical equipment used to measure mechanical quantities, such as force or pressure.

Differences between calibration and verification

Calibration aims to check the error of a measuring instrument, and sometimes to adjust it to align with a reference standard, ensuring accuracy.

Verification, on the other hand, simply confirms whether the instrument provides readings within acceptable limits established in the applicable Standard.

In other words, calibration measures or adjusts the error, while verification only validates the accuracy of the instrument.

Types of mechanical calibration

There are different types of mechanical calibration methods depending on the instrument or quantities that must be measured. We offer the following types of calibration:

  • Mass calibration, mostly to weight instruments.
  • Hardness calibration.
  • Force and moment calibration.

Weighing instruments

Weight measuring standards accurately materialise the exact quantity of mass that should be taken into account. The weighing equipment that we use on a daily basis in our everyday environment (commerce, health, trade...) is calibrated and adjusted based on these terms. In our laboratories, we calibrate:

  • Standard weights:
    • Permanent laboratory:
      • From 1 mg to 10 kg class E2 or lower quality according to OIML R111.
      • From 20 kg to 50 kg class F1 or lower quality according to OIML R111.
      • From 100 kg to 200 kg class M1 or lower quality according to OIML R111.
      • From 500 kg to 1000 kg class F2 or lower quality according to OIML R111.
    • On site:
      • 10 kg, 20 kg, 500 kg and 1000 kg class M1 or lower quality according to OIML R111.
  • Non OIML mass standards:
    • Permanent laboratory from 1 mg to 1000 kg.
    • In situ: 10 kg, 20 kg, 500 kg and 1000 kg.
  • Mass measurement:
    • Permanent laboratory from 1 g to 20 kg.

We also calibrate the following scales:

  • Non-automatic weighing instruments (NAWI).
    • Single-pan laboratory scales, from 0.02 kg to 50,000 kg.
    • Single-pan balances, from 1 mg to 150000 kg on site.
    • Hoppers, reactors, silos and bins from 1 kg to 80,000 kg in the field.
  • Automatic weighing instruments on site:
    • Automatic checkweighers up to 300 kg maximum.
    • Gravimetric filling instruments up to 5,000 kg.

Force and torque calibration

Pressure and vacuum calibration

We offer industrial calibration for various pressure and vacuum measuring equipment:

  • On-site pressure gauges, vacuum gauges and pneumatic absolute pressure transmitters from 0.5 kPa to 7 MPa in the laboratory.
  • Laboratory Pneumatic Relative Pressure Gauges and Transmitters from -95 kPa to 12 MPa.

How to calibrate instruments in mechanical calibration?

The first step to accredit mechanical calibration instruments in selecting an accredited calibration laboratory that meets ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, such as  Applus+ Laboratories.

The instruments are then sent to the laboratory, where they undergo rigorous testing using traceable reference equipment. Calibration results are compared with recognised standards, and some deviations may be corrected. 

Finally, a detailed calibration certificate is issued, which in some cases can confirm that the instrument complies with the established standards.
