Space Structures, Components, and Materials Testing

From individual satellite components to complete launch vehicles, we offer comprehensive space testing solutions to space‑industry developers and engineers. We provide reliable support for product safety, functionality, and quality assurance throughout the entire space‑industry development lifecycle.

As an ISO/IEC 17025‑accredited, AS/EN 9100‑certified, and NADCAP‑accredited materials‑testing laboratory for non‑metallic materials and non‑destructive testing (NDT), as well as an Airbus‑qualified laboratory, we test space components and systems to the highest industry standards.

We offer materials and structural testing in large and versatile facilities—capable of testing everything from raw materials to full‑scale assemblies—and we are equipped with unique capabilities for uniaxial and multiaxial high‑load tests. We support major European space programmes and work extensively with space structures such as satellites, launch vehicles, interstage sections, propulsion systems, and thrust frames.

Testing from Materials to Full Scale

Our full‑scale testing services encompass a wide range of capabilities to ensure aerospace components meet the highest standards of reliability and safety. We specialise in uniaxial and multiaxial high‑load testing, conducting both static and fatigue tests up to 15 MN.

All tests are performed under controlled conditions—from cryogenic to high temperatures—using state‑of‑the‑art technology for data acquisition and test monitoring.

Level 4: Full Scale

Our full‑scale testing provides comprehensive evaluations of aerospace components, ensuring reliability and safety under extreme conditions:

  • Structural Testing: We evaluate the effects of external forces on strength and stiffness under realistic load conditions until failure. This includes testing interstages, thrust frames, and interstage structures.
  • Testing with Media: We perform tank tests on a dedicated test bench using refuelling and pressure‑generation procedures, loading the specimens to burst to assess performance under extreme conditions.

Level 3: Bread Boards

We bridge the gap between lower‑level tests—such as coupons and lap joints—and full‑scale specimens, focusing on sub‑areas like rivets, stringer run‑outs, or window cut‑outs. Our services include detailed damage analysis and materialography to verify component integrity.

Level 2: Joints

We assess the connections between components—whether welds, rivets, or adhesives—by comparing material usage and design principles and verifying calculation methods to guarantee reliability and performance.

Level 1: Materials

We conduct comprehensive testing of metals and composites, including material characterisation of coupon samples as well as tensile, compression, and lap‑joint tests to evaluate material properties and performance.

Reference Overview

To validate the intertank structures of the Ariane 6 launch vehicle for upcoming missions, our experts developed monumental test stands. Through extensive structural testing, we meticulously assessed the strength, stiffness, and reliability of these critical structures—see the reference overview Our Testing Mission for the Ariane 6 Launch Vehicle.

Environmental Testing

Our environmental testing services include EMI/EMC, Radio, Fire, Climatic, and Vibration testing, all in compliance with the RTCA DO‑160 standard. We also cover flammability, smoke density and toxicity, heat release, and kerosene‑burner tests. Additionally, we provide high‑voltage system and battery testing with specialised equipment according to RTCA DO‑311.

Simulation

We partner on case studies, offering services such as virtual testing, simulation, and strength assessment. Leveraging advanced engineering methodologies and industry expertise, we simulate real‑world conditions to ensure products are robust, reliable, and operationally ready. We also collaborate closely with clients to refine designs, mitigate risk, and optimise performance through tailored simulation and assessment processes.
