Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing is essential to ensure that electronic devices and systems operate reliably in their intended environments—without causing or suffering from electromagnetic interference. Applus+ Laboratories is a global leader in EMC testing, offering comprehensive services through an extensive network of accredited laboratories with deep expertise in both general and industry-specific EMC requirements.

A Global EMC Laboratory Network

EU and the UK:
Our EMC laboratories in Spain, the United Kingdom, and Italy provide accredited testing services for emissions, immunity, ESD (electrostatic discharge) and different transients phenomenon. We test for a wide range of industries, including consumer and industrial equipment, radio/wireless, renewable energies, medical devices and aerospace and defence. We are a European leader in automotive EMC testing, including vehicle EMC testing

United States:
Our accredited EMC laboratories in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Michigan offer comprehensive EMC testing with multiple chambers designed for a wide range of consumer and industrial products, with specific expertise in Aerospace and Defense, Automotive and Medical standards.

China:
Our laboratories in China are equipped for advanced EMC testing, including large chambers for full-vehicle, Over-the-air (OTA) testing, and extensive expertise in automotive and medical devices, serving both local and global manufacturers.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Compliance Testing and Global Market Access

Accessing global markets requires demonstrating that products meet the specific EMC requirements of each target region. Depending on the country, EMC can be a standalone mandatory requirement for all electronic devices or part of a set of requirements for radio devices.

Our laboratories and Certification Bodies help manufacturers achieve compliance with national and international standards and regulations. We also provide global market access services, managing the process to meet local compliance requirements. Our integrated approach streamlines testing and documentation, helping manufacturers avoid costly delays and gain legal access to markets worldwide.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Testing Scope

  • Emissions Testing: Measurement of electromagnetic radiation and conducted emissions to ensure devices do not interfere with other equipment.
  • Immunity/Susceptibility Testing: Assessment of product resilience to external electromagnetic disturbances, including electrostatic discharge (ESD), radiated and conducted immunity, and surge testing.
  • Specialized Testing: Includes shielding effectiveness, lightning and surge, voltage ripple, and other industry-specific requirements.

EMC generic and specific standards

  • Generic EMC Standards: IEC 61000 family, CISPR generic and product standards, etc.
  • Industry EMC Standards: ECE R10 for Automotive, RTCA DO-160 for Aerospace, MIL-STD 461 for Defense, IEC 60601 family for Medical Devices, etc.
  • Client/OEM EMC Standards: Ford (FMC1278, FMC1279), General Motors (GMW3097, GMW3172), Stellantis (CS.00058, CS.00244, CS.00245, CS.00246), Volkswagen (TL 81000, VW80000), JLR (JLR-EMC-CS), etc.

Specialized Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Facilities

Component (1-meter and 3-meter) EMC chambers: We have a vast array of 1-meter and 3-meter semi-anechoic and faraday chambers in USA, Europe, and China, prepared to test products and components following basic and specific EMC standards.

10-meter EMC Chambers: Our network of laboratories includes multiple 10-meter in both Europe and China. They are equipped with large doors and reinforced floor suitable for full-vehicle, heavy duties and large product testing. We also have a large EMC chamber with full vehicle OTA-testing capabilities at our Shanghai laboratory.

Reverberation EMC Chambers: We can also provide EMC testing using the reverberation chamber method, an alternative to semi-anechoic chambers, that is gaining traction in some industries like automotive, aerospace and defense, as it can provide more realistic scenarios.

Advanced Equipment: Facilities are equipped with radio/wireless simulators, power sources, chillers, dynamometers, turntables, driving robots, and ad-hoc equipment specifically required for testing components with special needs such as batteries, EV chargers, power converters, e-motors in motion, or air and coolant heaters.
