Applus+ Laboratories hosts specialized training and international workshops on tunnel safety

22/09/2026

Over the past few weeks, Applus+ Laboratories’ safety testing tunnel, has hosted various technical and training activities organized together with leading organizations in the sector, including the Spanish Road Association (ATC) and the ITA-COSUF committee of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). Both events brought together professionals involved in tunnel operations, maintenance, and safety, including representatives from engineering firms, equipment manufacturers, and concession companies, with attendees from several European countries and the United States.

Although the topics covered were different, both initiatives shared the same objective: to analyze current tunnel safety challenges and create opportunities for professionals with direct responsibilities in the design, operation, and management of this type of infrastructure to exchange knowledge and experiences.

The workshop organized together with ITA-COSUF focused on issues such as the risks associated with new forms of mobility, lithium-ion battery fires in tunnels, and the adaptation of existing infrastructure to current requirements and standards. The course organized together with ATC covered topics related to fire prevention and management, ventilation systems, active and passive fire protection, intervention procedures, and emergency response.

Beyond the classroom: experiencing real-world phenomena

Technical knowledge transfer is an essential part of this type of activity, but many of the phenomena discussed in theoretical sessions can be difficult to fully understand without hands-on experience.

For this reason, both programs included activities held at the San Pedro de Anes experimental tunnel. Participants were able to observe how smoke behaves during controlled fires, analyze the operation of ventilation systems, and monitor the infrastructure’s response to different scenarios from the control room. The ATC course also included evacuation drills and live-fire demonstrations ranging from 5 to 10 MW.

The opportunity to observe these phenomena in a controlled environment makes it possible to connect concepts that are typically presented theoretically with real-world operating and emergency situations. Aspects such as smoke propagation, the impact of ventilation, and evacuation processes take on a different dimension when they can be analyzed directly in the field.

A setting for training and knowledge exchange

Applus+ Laboratories facilities include a 600-meter-long experimental tunnel designed for testing, simulations, and training activities related to safety in underground infrastructure. These capabilities enable practical exercises that complement conferences, workshops, and specialized training courses.

In a context shaped by evolving mobility, the adoption of new technologies, and the modernization of existing infrastructure, collaboration among operators, engineering firms, manufacturers, authorities, and technical organizations is essential. Initiatives such as those recently held in San Pedro de Anes (Asturias) facilities make it possible to combine the exchange of experiences with direct observation of real-world situations, contributing to a better understanding of the challenges involved in tunnel safety.
