Thus it is suited with priority as forging to be used. As semi-finished product this alloy is standardised in all kinds, excepting thin sheet metals and strips as well as wires. In addition the alloy AlCuSiMn has the large advantage compared with the AlCuMg alloys that it is sufficiently corrosion resistant also in the warm-hardened condition. In this condition it reaches strength grade up to F 44 for forgings and for sheet metals over 1,5 mm of thickness even F 46. Because of the high strength of this material it is suitable well for construction units, which are intended for high static loadings, however not for welded structures. Since welding at the welding seam and within the surrounding ranges causes strength losses, screws and rivets should be used as joining elements. The good splinter-giving workability of this alloy is of advantage for it likewise. Heat treatment for hardening: solution annealing: 495 to 505 °C, quenching in water cold ageing: 5 to 8 d at ambient temperature hot ageing: 8 to 16 h at 160 to 180 °C Application: In mechanical engineering (including building of forms) for tools and devices (baseplates, head and stamp retaining plates, guide plates) for machine tables, turned parts (pneumatics/hydraulics), for shaft couplings (also flexible), in the building of rail-mounted vehicles for wheel-center disks, axle box cases. In the automobile engineering for bumpers, safety-related parts as well as use in the aircraft construction.
