1) Remark: Because of its high quenching distortion during hardening and of the through-hardenability that is limited to approximately 25 mm, the hardenable titanium alloy TiAl6V4 with the material number 3.7165 (see also TiAl6V4, 3.7164, according to the Werkstoff-Leistungsblatt der Deutschen Luftfahrt WL3.7164) is generally used in the annealed condition, except for the manufacturing of small parts, connection components in particular. TiAl6V4 possesses a favourable ratio of strength and weight, a high fracture toughness in the annealed condition and thermal stability in the range from -200 to 400 °C. Corrosion resistance: Good corrosion resistance to strongly oxidizing acids, especially resistant to nitric acid, chromic acid, sulphurous acid, alkali lyes, ammonia, aqueous chlorides, salt brine, sea water, moist chlorine gas, acetic acid, malein acid, liquid hydrogen, limited resistance to sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, oxalic acid and formic acid. The material is not resistant to fluorine, dry chlorine gas and red fuming nitric acid. There exists resistance to stress cracking corrosion. Processing properties: Formability: limited (cold forming), good (hot forming) Weldability: good (tungsten inert-gas, plasma, electron beam and resistance welding) Application: Fields of application are the engine and airframe construction in the aeroplane industry, measurement devices and valves and fittings, laboratory centrifuges and the automobile sport.
